Mary, Did You Know?

Posted by: santa1  /  Category: Christmas

Mary, Did You Know? is a Christmas song with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984 and music written by Buddy Greene six years later.

The song has been recorded by many diverse artists, including Christopher Parkening & Kathleen Battle, Gary Chapman, Spoken, Reba McEntire, Michael Crawford, Natalie Cole, Brian Littrell, Clay Aiken, Heatwarmer, Kimberley Locke, Kathy Mattea, Kalan Porter, Clay Walker, Donny Osmond, Michael W. Smith, Hayley Westenra, Michael English, B.E. Taylor, The Von Trapp Children, The Gas House Gang, Kutless, Tony Orlando, Lea Salonga and Steve Decrow. David Archuleta had also performed this live, as so did many other artists. Finbar Wright recorded it in 2009 for ‘The Irish Tenors Christmas’.

Mark Lowry has recorded his own version of the song on three of his albums. The first recording was on his album Remotely Controlled and the second recording was on his album Mark Lowry on Broadway. Before writing the song, Lowry had many questions about what Mary was thinking and his thoughts are explained right before he sings the song on his album Mark Lowry on Broadway. His most recent album containing the song is his Christmas album titled Mary, Did You Know released in 2004.

A duet version recorded by Wynonna and Kenny Rogers peaked at #55 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts in 1997.
