In many European countries they have been showing this comedy sketch for years on New Years Eve. It is a sketch not missed by many as they sit glued in front of the TV.
On the way to see the newborn Jesus the three Wise Men stopped at the Palace of Kind Herod of Israel, as they thought that a new King of Israel had been born and that it must surely be the son of the present King. King Herod asked them to come back to him and report where they had found this newborn King so he could worship him. This was a lie and he actually planned to kill Jesus, whom he thought was after the Kings throne. The three Wise Men found out and took another route home, to avoid the King.
So King Herod ordered all baby boys under the age of 3 to be killed. In the middle ages they thought the number of children killed was 14.000. But as Bethlehem was just a tiny village at that time it is now estimated that around 25 children were massacred. Today we celebrate the martyrs who died for Jesus. He escaped to Egypt with his family.
